The largest meme coins by market capitalization in Dogecoin (DOGE), Shiba Inu (SHIB), and PepeCoin (PEPE) have been trading in the red since last week amid the rise of new competitors in the sector.
Recent bearish moves from Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) certainly haven’t helped either given their high correlation to the rest of the market.
PEPE topped the losses among the top three meme coins, down 14.9% since last week and 5.5% in the last 24 hours. It’s currently trading at $0.00000144 with a market capitalization of $619 million.
Still, on a 30-day scale, PEPE is up 52.5% after posting impressive triple-digit gains during June’s meme coin rally.
The launch of copycat projects like PEPE 2.0 and Shib 2.0 captured the market’s attention last week.
PEPE 2.0’s market capitalization soared over $50 million within a few days of its launch, per CoinGecko data.
At the same time, a new meme coin project, Wall Street Memes, created by the team that brought the popular Wall St Bulls NFT collection, has raised over $13 million in less than a week.
Is memecoin season really back? A crypto investor swapped 0.125 ETH, then worth $250, for 5.9 trillion PEPE tokens four days ago. Those tokens are currently worth $1.02 million. But the PEPE holder could struggle to realize that profit, due to liquidity issues around the token. While the memecoin investor currently holds $1.02 million in PEPE tokens, upon closer inspection it's clear that there is a difference between the valuation of assets "on paper" and real cash held. "With 5.9 trillion PEP...
The arrival of new competitors in the space likely shifted the trader’s attention away from PEPE. This can be seen in the declining trading volumes for the meme coins, falling below pre-pump levels in June.
The negative price action in BTC and ETH last week amid rate hike expectations by the U.S. Federal Reserve likely added to the selling pressure in meme coins.
BTC briefly lost support at $30,000 on Friday last week, last trading at $30,165.
ETH also slipped below $1,900 as buyers failed to maintain the positive momentum from June, last trading at $1,861.

Livestreaming with an attached meme coin was popularized this year after a mom promised sexual acts if her apparent son’s meme coin, called LiveMom, hit specific market caps. Despite promising to pour milk over her “36DDs,” the same ones her son allegedly “actually suckled on,” the pair ghosted with nothing really crazy going down. But clearly, some degens saw the viral sensation this became and tried to capitalize on it. Quickly, a flurry of copycat tokens launched, including LiveSis, countles...
Top college football prospect Matai Tagoa’i is set to join football stars like Russell Okung, Odell Beckham Jr., and Trevor Lawrence by receiving his compensation in Bitcoin. The linebacker will be paid part of his earnings via the Strike app after signing a “name, image, and likeness” (NIL) deal with the University of Southern California (USC). The exact details of his package are not known, but some college football players, such as Shedeur Sanders, have received estimated payouts of up to $4....
The world’s largest asset manager BlackRock just debuted a new advertisement proselytizing the virtues of Bitcoin, but rather than cheer on the Bitcoin ETF issuer for its efforts, Bitcoiners aren’t happy. The video, which is housed on the iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) ETF page on BlackRock’s website, spends three minutes walking viewers through the evolution of money and key fundamentals of Bitcoin. One of those fundamentals is Bitcoin’s 21 million fixed token supply. While the video explains t...
