Fresh from its $69 million sale of a Beeple NFT, auction house giant Christie’s is planning to sell nine CryptoPunks—the notoriously pricey NFTs tied to tiny digital portraits.
CryptoPunks is a series of 10,000 unique images from the development studio Larva Labs, each of which is tied to an NFT, or non-fungible tokentoken.
NFTs are cryptographically secured collectibles that can be attached to a file and sold as proof of ownership. Christie’s sold its first NFT (along with an associated physical artwork) back in October of last year. The Beeple auction last month holds the record for the most expensive NFT ever sold, though CryptoPunks collectively have generated more money in sales.
Some CryptoPunks have already gone for upwards of $7 million.
A pixelated picture of a male “punk” sold for over 78 ETH (≈$136,000) this morning, as per a tweet by Ethereum-based digital art app CryptoPunks. The sale is just the latest sign of the increasing popularity of the non-fungible token (NFT) market, one that has gained lots of steam in the past year. NFTs are a cryptographic representation of tangible or intangible items on the blockchain. They represent ownership of whichever asset they are linked to (this can be real estate, art, comic books, o...
NFTs are a polarizing new development in the art world: some think they’re a progressive force, with the power to put secondary market revenue back in the hands of artists. Others think they’re just a gimmick—an ecological nightmare, and a medium for cloying, sensationalist images.
I speak to well meaning people new to the space for whom this whole moment is only understood as buying jpegs. Narrative failure.

According to promotional materials, nine CryptoPunks are being auctioned together in a single lot at the 21st Century Evening Sale on May 11.
And if you’re not quite ready to put up millions of dollars at auction, you can check out other CryptoPunks on Miami billboards in the near future, as part of a public art project called Pixelated.
Editor's note: This article was updated after publication to correct the date of the auction. The sale takes place May 11, not May 13.
Three years after a peak NFT mania that drove monthly trading volume to billions of dollars and put the Bored Ape Yacht Club on The Tonight Show, the collectible tokens are once more gaining steam—and so is popular NFT marketplace OpenSea. NFT trading volume recently hit a three-month high, and after marketplace competitor Magic Eden concluded its own ME airdrop, speculation is heating up about a potential OpenSea token. The marketplace may or may not be teasing it, recently asking X (formerly...
The Philadelphia 76ers have launched "Spectrum Sprint," a free-to-play mobile game with Web3 elements, in collaboration with Crypto.com—a team sponsor since 2021. The NBA team’s game features a pixel art vibe, with side-scrolling gameplay that challenges players to navigate iconic Philadelphia landmarks and dash down Broad Street towards the team’s former Spectrum arena. Players can unlock digital collectibles and compete for exclusive prizes across four tiers: Rookie, Pro, All-Star, and Legend....
Nifty Island embraced a wide array of established communities in Web3 to help expand its Roblox-style metaverse game. Now it’s rewarding them. The project, which pioneered the now-popular “play-to-airdrop” campaign, just launched ISLAND, an Ethereum-based utility token that serves as the ecosystem token for its in-game economy. Below, learn everything you need to know about ISLAND now that it's live. What is ISLAND? ISLAND is the native token of the Nifty Island ecosystem, offering holders “i...
