After crashing to their lowest prices since summer 2020 last week, Bitcoin and Ethereum have begun to recover. The world’s two biggest cryptocurrencies are both up around 8%.
Bitcoin currently trades at around £36,400, about 8% higher than it was this time yesterday, but around 10% down from Tuesday last week, when it traded for over $42,000.
Ethereum is worth around $2,400 at the time of writing, about 9% higher than it was yesterday, but a staggering 22% down from prices this time last week, when it traded for over $3,200.
Overall, the global crypto market is in recovery. Its market capitalization is currently around $1.65 trillion, which is 7.6% up from yesterday.
They’re not even the biggest risers in the top fifteen cryptocurrencies by market cap today. Polkadot grew 12% overnight, while Avalanche is up 15% in the last 24 hours.
Metaverse and layer 1 cryptocurrencies are doing particularly well today. Cosmos and Fantom led the charge with overnight surges of 15% and 19% respectively.
Some of the excitement could be down to the fact that crypto investment company Grayscale is reviewing 25 new cryptocurrencies, including high-profile Layer 1 and metaverse tokens.
Previous Grayscale announcements of this type have typically presaged the launch of new Grayscale trusts for the announced cryptocurrencies, akin to its massively successful Grayscale Bitcoin Trust.
Digital asset manager Grayscale Investments announced that it is currently reviewing 25 new cryptocurrencies, including some high-profile Layer 1 and Metaverse cryptocurrencies. If selected, the firm would likely launch a trust focused on the specific cryptocurrency, akin to its Grayscale Bitcoin Trust or its Grayscale Chainlink Trust, for example. These include ALGO (Algorand), ATOM (Cosmos), AXS (Axie Infinity), DCR (Decred), EGLD (Elrond), ENJ (Enjin), FTM (Fantom), GALA (Gala), SCRT (Secret...
The broader market has seen a large sell-off this week among tech stocks, with the price of many big companies plummeting. This in turn may have contributed to the crypto market’s recent crash.
Other fingers have pointed to the possibility of rising inflation, with interest rate hikes expected soon. The U.S. Federal Reserve will outline an economic roadmap after its two-day policy meeting, which starts today.

Coinbase has now overtaken two of the world's largest securities exchanges in terms of transaction revenue, according to a crypto analyst from the private bank Coutts. The crypto exchange generated $5.75 billion in transaction revenue over the past 12 months, compared to just $4.54 billion for the Nasdaq, where many of the world’s most valuable companies, including Apple, Google, and Microsoft, are traded. Coinbase also surpassed the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong, the HKEX, which generated $2.67 b...
After several extended reviews since June this year, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has finally approved the first spot exchange-traded funds combining Bitcoin and Ethereum. The agency has authorized Nasdaq to list the Hashdex Nasdaq Crypto Index US ETF and the Cboe BZX Exchange to list the Franklin Crypto Index ETF, according to a filing released Thursday. "The proportion of bitcoin and ether to be held by each Trust will be based on free-float market capitalizations," the filing...
Dogecoin (DOGE) fell 12.4% in the past 24 hours as a broader market decline continues, triggered by the Federal Reserve's latest economic outlook. The meme coin has dropped to $0.31, while trading volume surged 67% to $10.25 billion as holders repositioned their bags. It's now down 35% from its 2024 high of $0.47. Despite the pullback, Dogecoin's market capitalization remains at $46.6 billion, maintaining its position as the seventh-largest crypto. Powell's hawkish comments about higher-than-exp...
